Yesterday as I waited (for what seemed like 8 years during the 11am rush) in line at Starbucks, I noticed one of their colorfully decorated chalkboards had the slogan “Happy is a Flavor” scribbled across it. That got me thinking about how foods really do influence the way you feel. I knew that once I got my tea latte that a new inner peace would be brought upon me, and when I got my chicken hummus wrap for lunch later in the day the same sort of comfort would come, breaking up the monotony and busyness in my life. Happy indeed is a flavor.
To continue my breakfast blogging streak, I made Happy Oatmeal for breakfast. When it is cold out, there is nothing that makes me feel more prepared to face nature than a good bowl of hearty oats. I like taking plain steel-cut oats, soaking them overnight, and adding my own mix-ins in the morning. This way I get the perfect bowl, and it never fails to satisfy my taste and hunger. Today’s version: 1/2 cup steel-cut oats, 1/2 cup unsweetened almond milk, 1/2 cup water, 1 TBS almond butter, 1 TBS raspberry jam, 1 banana, handful of blueberries and a dash of cinnamon.
To answer your wonders, yes, I did play with my oats today. You have to have FUN with your food right? I love using almond milk because it makes the oats extremely creamy and adds a light almond flavor. As strange as it might sound, adding nut butters and jam to you oatmeal makes a WORLD of difference for both texture and flavor. They sweeten, provide crunch and make the meal more filling. I always have to add fruit and cinnamon to my oats no matter what else I choose to mix in. Actually, I tend to put cinnamon on everything, it has such a nice warm flavor to it. Whatever you choose, make sure the ingredients you use are things that make you feel good!
Cheers to Happy Meals,
