Happy Monday!! It is important to start your week out right, and what is a better way than having a good breakfast? Today, my breakfast was a “new food venture”: Muesli. I’ve heard of this breakfast cereal but never knew its origins. Muesli consists of uncooked oats, fruits, nuts and seeds. It originated in Switzerland, and is typically enjoyed cold, soaked in yogurt or milk overnight. I’m usually a granola person when it comes to cold cereal and love stove top oatmeal on cold winter days. Muesli sounded like a mix of the two, so I had to give it a try. I tried Bob’s Red Mill Muesli, soaked in a cup (says on bag to use a ½ cup but it didn’t look substantial enough for me) of plain yogurt over night then topped with banana, blueberries and cinnamon in the morning. (Side Note: you know you are a foodie when you actually PLAN and wake up early excited for breakfast!) This muesli contains whole grain rolled oats, wheat, rye, triticale and barley, almonds, dates, raisins, sunflower seeds and flax. There is no sodium, cholesterol, preservatives or additives. I felt heart healthy just looking at the bag!
The verdict: I LIKE. Breakfast is absolutely my most favorite meal of the day, so I’ m a harsh critic when it comes to breakfast foods. The raisins took on a plump and chewy consistency after being soaked overnight, and I loved the crunch and contrast of flavor the sunflower seeds gave to the mix. The different grains in the cereal made me feel like I was having a more well rounded breakfast than having just plain oats. I am satisfied, energized and ready to take on whatever challenges this week might bring.
What is your favorite breakfast? Do you typically have time to sit down and enjoy, or is it often “on the go style”?
