Get Ready for this: day 2 post about life! GO ME! For the past nine months, I have been working part time in the service bakery (bread department) at my local grocery store, and nothing makes me happier. I remember all summer long looking forward to working my typical 6am-2:30pm and always leaving the store with a smile. You might wonder what is so glamorous about my job that would cause me to be extremely elated at such an ungodly hour, and my answer is simple: There is absolutely nothing sexy about bagging , slicing and stocking shelves. I would constantly smell and be covered head to toe in flour and bread crumbs, and would often find things such as sunflower seeds and flax seeds in my shirt. But despite these things, there is something about the environment that gives me a natural high and brings a bit of meaning and balance in my life. I walk in everyday enthusiastic to be around other people who are excited about food. I know that I am going learn something new each time I enter the store. I think it is so rare to find something that makes you feel like this, and I would work there for free just to have it (don’t repeat that to my boss though I need money so I can afford my foodieness. I end up spending it all at the store anyways…vicious cycle.).
We are a full service bakery, and on Saturdays (my day of work during the academic year) it looks like a three-ring circus. Workers are perpetually running all around the department, and there are shopping cart accidents left and right. One of my co-workers likes to joke that we should have a reality TV show for the bakery because of the oddities of the people we encounter. Today, the day before the Superbowl, was one of the craziest Saturdays in my time. When I came in I saw a giant crock pot filled with nacho cheese, as they were demoing “Pretzel Rolls Filled With Nacho Cheeseee!” (Not-ach much love for those, as good as it may taste, I’m not a huge fan of liquid cheese in a bag). Next to that was a local brewing company sampling beer, and next to him was a local cheese manufacturer featuring a triple cream cheddar! I also have to add that there were balloons supporting the Superbowl teams AND a flat screen TV with a football game on. It was a spectacle to say the least. All day long I was subjected to phrases such as “Beer Here”, “Pretzel Rolls with Nacho Cheese at Superbowl Central” and “Bread, Cheese, Beer–doesn’t get any better than that!”. When people came over to our department their facial expressions were such that you might think they hit the lottery. I wish I was able to get a picture of this event. The store I work at is all about providing exceptional service to their customers. They always have such great events that people get excited about. This is why I thrive there, it’s fast paced, innovative and centered around food. I can’t wait for Valentine’s Day next weekend– we are featuring a Chocolate Cherry Bread which is to die for.
Have Passion and Fun,
P.S I’m considering writing a Saturday edition about “Bakery Blunders” to my blog. Working there is never dull, and we do indeed have a lot of “reality-tv-worthy” moments. Thoughts?
